Breathing

Breath is a necessity of life. Each breath you take is a small miracle of chemistry and physics, yet most people never think about breathing unless the air is polluted or they have asthma or allergies. They take the everyday miracle of breathing for granted.

Breath is the connecting link between our mind and body, and the key to opening the doorway to our mystical [spiritual] nature. Our open, full breathing brings these parts together to work in harmony and balance.

Healthy breathing is not only a physical health asset but a mental, emotional and spiritual one. The mind grows clearer, the brain develops more alertness, the ability to think quickly is heightened, feelings remain calm and clear as proper breathing becomes an established every-day-of-the-year habit.

Take a moment to pay grateful attention to your breath.

Mantra

'Mantras' are tools for focusing the mind, and also for filling the mind with the grace of the deity. A mantra is the word form of the deity, and is filled with the power of the deity. Constant repetition of a mantra not only helps in concentration, but also creates the energy of the deity.

A mantra need not be always connected with a deity. One can also use a positive affirmation as a mantra.

Repeating the mantra along with each breath using a particular count focuses the mind on the entire process of breathing, and at the same time infusing the body with the energy of the mantra.

Easy yet powerful mantras are-
" Om Namah Shivaya", " Om Namo Narayanaya", "Om Ganesh"

Meditate with Breath

Yoga calls breathing prana. That word is beautiful. Prana means the elan vital, the very vitality of your being.

It is not just air coming and going through your lungs. Yoga says the air is just the outer layer of it. Hidden deep in that layer is vitality.

So breathing has two parts. One: the body of breathing, made up of oxygen, nitrogen and so on, and, two: the spirit of breathing, made up of vitality, God himself.

Yoga calls those methods pranayama. The word pranayama means expansion of life. One has to expand life to infinity in each breath.

Buddha said to his monks: "Sitting, walking, standing, whatsoever you are doing, go on doing these things, but let your consciousness be aware of the breath coming in, going out. Go on looking at your own breath -- one day with the very continuous hammering on the breath, the temple opens."

God is hidden in the temple of the breath.

Breathing Meditation :

Take a few deep breaths, breathing deep into the belly, and exhale with force, releasing all tension. With awareness of your breath coming in and going out, repeat your chosen mantra or affirmation in this ratio-
once for each in-breath and twice for each out breath.
As you start focusing on the mantra blending with the breath, feel it spreading throughout your body.
Continue until you feel totally relaxed and refreshed.

You can either stop repeating the mantra, but continue the breath awareness as you go about your tasks, or, mentally continue the mantras too.
Observe how you feel at the end of the day!
