Meditation - Archive

We are now starting a series of meditations and exercises exploring the mind-body connection. It is a journey of 'Self- Knowledge' and self- healing. The complete unity of body and mind is reflected in our state of wellness and illness. Our aim is to achieve total harmony between body and mind, since an imbalance in one affects the other.

The body-mind is an intricate system which is totally inter-connected. The bloodstream, nervous system, skeletal, muscular, lymphatic, limbic systems all work in communication with each other.
Our emotional state is linked with the body through the limbic system which governs automatic functioning such as fluid balance, endocrine secretion and gastro-intestinal activity.
The hypothalamus is a small region in the brain, a part of the limbic system, that maintains many of the body's functions. Numerous nerve fibres from all over our brain are linked to the hypothalamus, and in a way it connects psychological and emotional activity with bodily functioning.

The message which our mind gives our body determines its well-being. Negative thought patterns like fears, worry, anger, jealousy, criticism etc. can create an imbalance in the functioning of this complex system.

Let us start by focusing on the message we give our body. This meditation given below is part of a Shamanic experience.

The Inward Smile

Sit comfortably with the back erect and feet firmly in contact with the floor. Close your eyes. Relax the mouth and allow it to form a smile.
Now turn the smile inward, and into yourself…into your eyes, face, jaws, releasing any tension and smoothing out wrinkles. Smile into your throat and neck, chest..lungs..heart…abdomen..liver…kidneys..and into the base of your spine…..slowly up the spine, into the head, smiling as you go. Feel the smile spreading into your brain and relaxing this area completely.

Now smile into all the nerves radiating from your brain into the body.

Finally move down to the navel and smile into this centre where you store your power.

Your whole body should now feel aglow, in a state of well-being.
Open your eyes, but retain that smile.

*Practise this inward smile first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Perform it several times during the day. Perform it before facing any problematical, difficult or traumatic situation.
